Householders in Bournemouth and Poole have been left without food waste collections for as long as five weeks, according to residents and local reports. BCP Council launched a weekly food waste collection service in April, yet some residents received only two collections in the first two months. The heatwave has made matters considerably worse, with bins reportedly writhing with maggots, drawing flies and rats, and smelling rancid.
The council attributes the backlog to hydraulic failures on collection lorries caused by the extreme heat, as well as staff shortages. Crews have also been slowed to protect their safety. BCP Council has apologised and says some collections are now starting as early as 5am to cope with the conditions.
The council advises that missed collections in the BCP area are delayed rather than cancelled. Residents should keep their caddy closed as tightly as possible to limit smells and pests, and continue putting their bin out on the usual collection day.
