Households across England are being warned to check their bin collection dates over the Christmas and New Year period, as councils have rescheduled collections. Delays range from one day in areas such as the London Borough of Greenwich and Leeds, up to six days in Bolton. Buckinghamshire Council has shifted its late-December and early-January collections by one to two days, with knock-on delays running through to 11 January.
In Birmingham, Unite members are set to strike from 6 January in a dispute over pay, with overtime banned from 2 January. The union says the action will cause "considerable disruption" to bin collections. Strike dates run through to April.
Because bin collections are handled locally, arrangements vary by area. Residents can check their next collection date and report missed bins by entering their postcode at gov.uk/rubbish-collection-day.
