Bin collections in Birmingham remain severely disrupted after an all-out strike by council refuse workers entered its tenth month. Workers backed by Unite walked out in January 2025 over a council plan to remove Waste Recycling and Collection Officer roles. The union claims around 170 workers stood to lose up to £8,000 a year. An indefinite all-out strike began in March.
West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker told BBC Radio WM he was "deeply concerned" about the impact on residents and had urged both Birmingham City Council and Unite to return to the negotiating table. He said he had "done all I can" but acknowledged he had no direct power over the negotiations or contracts involved.
No confirmed end date exists for the dispute. Residents should check Birmingham City Council's website for the latest guidance on collections in their area, as normal bin rounds continue to be affected.
