Bin collections in Birmingham will remain disrupted for months after refuse workers voted unanimously to extend their strike until at least September, according to LBC. The action began in January 2025. Many residents have faced infrequent rubbish collections since then, with waste accumulating on streets across the city.
Unite the Union says the dispute stems from Birmingham City Council firing and rehiring workers onto new contracts that it claims cut pay by up to £8,000 a year. The union's regional officer Onay Kasab told LBC the strike could be resolved through negotiation. The council maintains it has made fair offers and invited Unite to put forward proposals, which it says the union has declined.
The council says service improvements are due to begin rolling out in June regardless of whether the strike continues. Residents should check with Birmingham City Council for the latest information on their collections.
