Householders in Cheshire East will wait longer than the law requires for weekly food waste collections. The council has confirmed it will miss the government's 31 March 2026 deadline, blaming the need to expand its waste depot and delays in obtaining food waste caddies and specialist collection vehicles, according to BBC News.
The new weekly food waste service must be provided free of charge under national rules. Cheshire East says it will launch in autumn, at which point general household waste collections will also shift to every three weeks. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has been informed of the revised timetable.
Warrington Council says it will be ready by the 31 March deadline. Cheshire West and Chester Council already runs weekly food waste collections for most homes and is working to extend the service to city centre properties and flats.
