Coventry residents who want their garden waste collected will need to pay £40 a year from next month, according to the BBC. Collections under the new permit scheme begin the week of 3 June 2024. The council will not empty brown-lid bins that do not display a valid permit sticker, which must be fixed to the back of the bin, under the handles.
The annual charge runs from 1 June to 31 May and applies per 240-litre bin, up to a maximum of 10 bins per household. Residents can pay online, by phone, or in person at the council's customer service centre in the Upper Precinct. Permits are delivered within 10 working days of payment. There is no discount for those who sign up part-way through the year.
Households that do not pay can still take garden waste to a local recycling centre or compost at home. Food waste can go in green-lid household bins. The council described the charge as a "tough decision" driven by financial pressures.
