Darlington Council urges residents to put food waste bin out every week, even if it is not full

Darlington Borough Council is urging residents to use their weekly food waste collection every week, even when they have only a small amount to put out. Some households have been skipping collections on the grounds that they generate too little food waste to make it worthwhile. The council disagrees: tea bags, coffee grounds, meat and fish bones, plate scrapings and vegetable peelings all count and should go in the bin.

The borough-wide scheme launched in June. Food waste bins, kitchen caddies and recycling bags were delivered to every household, leaving most homes in Darlington with up to six bins for different types of waste and recycling.

The council has also reminded residents that contamination stickers will be issued to any household that puts the wrong items in recycling bins. A single wrongly sorted load can contaminate an entire collection wagon. Fines have been ruled out; the council says it will focus on education rather than enforcement.
