Households in Great Yarmouth face missed bin collections after around 100 workers employed by Great Yarmouth Services — the council's own company — threatened to strike over pay. Members of Unite, Unison and GMB are backing the action, which could begin within a fortnight if the dispute remains unresolved.
Workers were offered a 3.3% pay rise. Unions are demanding 20%. Unite says the offer falls below the 4.1% minimum wage increase that took effect in April, and has warned that bins along the seafront could overflow during the busy summer tourist season.
Council leader Carl Smith told the BBC he was "disappointed" by the demand, describing it as "unreasonable, unrealistic and unaffordable", and said plans were in place to limit disruption to residents. Unite regional officer Claire Lees said collections would not take place "for however long it takes" if workers walk out.
