Leicester residents asked for views on bin and recycling changes

BBC News · Leicester · 12 Jul 2026

Leicester City Council is asking residents to share their views on planned changes to bin collections and recycling. The consultation opened on 7 April and closes on 19 May. Residents can take part via the council's website.

The changes stem from the government's Simpler Recycling rules, which require all councils in England to introduce a separate weekly food waste collection from next year. Leicester has said every home will receive an indoor kitchen caddy and a dedicated outdoor bin for food waste. The council's existing waste and recycling contract with Biffa ends in May 2028, so a new agreement will need to be in place before then.

Nothing will change for residents in the immediate future, the council stressed. Deputy city mayor Elly Cutkelvin said the authority is "very much in listening mode" and wants collections to remain "simple to use, reliable and cost-effective".
