Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council has confirmed weekly food waste collections will begin between April and May, with the start date depending on which day bins are normally collected. Tuesday collections begin 14 April, Wednesday from 29 April, Thursday from 14 May, and Friday from 29 May. Food waste will be collected on the same day as existing household waste and recycling.
Welcome packs will be delivered from 23 March. Each household receives a five-litre kitchen caddy, a roll of compostable liners, and a 23-litre outdoor food waste container to be emptied weekly. Residents should put food scraps — plate scrapings, peelings, tea bags — into the kitchen caddy and transfer the contents to the outdoor bin on collection day. Communal properties will be included from June.
The changes stem from a government requirement for all English councils to offer weekly food waste collections to every household by 31 March 2026, though the council acknowledges one in four councils will miss that deadline. Collected food waste will be sent to an anaerobic digestion facility.
