Households in England could face new bin collection rules under the government's 'Simpler Recycling in England' policy, according to the Mirror. Every home would receive four bins as a standard set-up, replacing the current mix of bags, boxes and containers that varies between council areas. A weekly food waste collection would also be introduced.
Paper and card would be kept separate from other dry recyclables. Plastics, metals and glass could be collected together, and food and garden waste could be combined in a single collection. The government says the changes will not push the number of bins beyond four, with councils retaining some flexibility to suit local needs.
The policy aims to lift England's recycling rate, which has remained stuck at around 44% since 2015. Councils would no longer be required to collect seven separate waste streams, as had previously been proposed.
