England's recycling system changed last month under the government's Simpler Recycling reforms, introduced through the Environment Act 2021. Six common kitchen items are now banned from household recycling collections: drinking glasses, glass cookware such as Pyrex dishes, ceramic crockery, cutlery, pots and pans, and coffee pods. Include any of these and your collection could be refused, according to the source.
Most should go in your general waste bin, wrapped securely if broken or sharp. Usable crockery, cookware and cutlery can be donated to a charity shop. Cutlery and pans may also be accepted at a local recycling centre's scrap metal area, and some centres now have dedicated coffee pod bins.
Check with your own council before changing what you put out. Some local authorities are exempt from the new rules until at least 2040, so the changes may not yet apply in your area.
