Around 15,000 Tamworth residents who pay for garden waste collections could see their annual subscription rise from £36 to £41 from 1 October, if council leaders approve the increase at a meeting on 8 August. According to the BBC, the £36 charge has not changed since it was introduced in 2017.
The council cites rising staffing, fuel and carbon-reduction costs as the reason for reviewing the fee. A report to councillors also points out that neighbouring Lichfield District Council — which runs a joint waste service with Tamworth — already charges £40, and the £4 gap creates an administrative burden.
Annual indexation is also proposed, with the charge updated each year in line with the June Consumer Prices Index (CPI) figure, rounded to the nearest 50 pence. Only residents subscribed to the garden waste service would be affected.
