Trafford Council is consulting residents on plans to introduce a £45-a-year charge for garden waste collections. Householders paying online would pay that rate; those using other payment methods would be charged an extra £5. The council says the subscription is needed to help bridge a £25m funding gap in its 2025/26 budget.
Garden waste would continue to be collected weekly for subscribers if the charge goes ahead. The council stresses that charges cannot legally be applied to other bin collections. The free weekly food waste collection would remain unchanged.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the council's executive member for environmental services said more than three quarters of councils already charge for garden waste. Residents can give their views at trafford.gov.uk/gardenwaste.
